Center for Companies That Care, a national not-for-profit, honored Bonnie Shelor, Senior Vice President, Human Resources for Bon Secours Richmond Health System, with its second annual Bonnie Dayan Memorial Award. Shelor was selected for this prestigious award from a field of national candidates whose companies already were named to the national Companies That Care Honor Roll.

“This award was established in the memory of an executive from family-owned Triangle Printers, Inc. who had demonstrated unwavering commitment to ensuring her company invested in its employees and served its communities. Bonnie Dayan also encouraged other organizations to become caring employers,” said Marci Koblenz, Co-founder and President of Center for Companies That Care.

Bonnie Shelor’s actions are synonymous with Companies That Care’s 10 Characteristics of a Caring Company. Within Bon Secours, Bonnie sets the stage for employees to feel respected and valued. Each year, employees share their opinions and ideas through surveys and open forums. With Bonnie as an example, supervisors wholeheartedly support employee development, work/life flexibility, and recognition for jobs well done. Benefits and compensation programs are offered, reviewed, and enhanced to improve the well-being of employees and their families. Examples are child care, elder care, scholarships for children and grandchildren, full benefits at 16 hours/week and a minimum wage that exceeds the state mandate by 40%.

The programs Bonnie has implemented at Bon Secours Richmond are the outward expression of something that lies within her. The reason Bon Secours Richmond is a Company That Cares is because Bonnie is an individual that cares. Under Bonnie Shelor’s leadership, Bon Secours Richmond Health System has achieved a 4.23 out of 5 employee engagement rating, making her organization one of the highest-scoring healthcare organizations in America.

“The programs we have in place at Bon Secours for employees have all been made possible by Bonnie,” says Dawn Malone, Administrative Director of Work and Family Services, and Bonnie’s nominator. “Bonnie has an amazing ability to recognize a person’s talent and to surround herself with an incredible team. She then listens to that team and puts into place practices that benefit the greater employee population.”

Jill Kennedy, Chief Nursing Executive, said, “As a mother and a chief nursing executive — two professions I take very seriously — I have found that the only thing employees value more than their time is having control of it. Flexibility at Bon Secours Richmond allows employees to be where they need to be most — whether at the bedside of an ill child (or parent) or at work, being fully present to a patient or coworker. Flexibility says to our employees ‘we appreciate, value and trust you.’ Now, isn’t that the kind of person you want caring for you when you’re sick?”

Her impact in the community is exceptional. Bonnie is routinely called upon to present at conferences and meetings. In these local, state and national opportunities, Bonnie lists Companies That Care Honor Roll as a prestigious achievement of Bon Secours Richmond and how that honor defines it as a preeminent employer. She also strives to affect priority public policy for health screenings for the public and co-sponsors career transition and phased retirement events with other associations. Bonnie and others at Bon Secours Richmond give their time, energy, and commitment in many meaningful ways.

Bonnie’s heart is in the right place and that is what fuels her drive. She wants Bon Secours Richmond to be a place where the community receives compassionate care, where room is made for miracles to happen, and where employees can have the highest professional and personal satisfaction. That is why she received this award!

On behalf of all of us here at Triangle, congratulations to Bonnie Shelor for winning this prestigious award.

Triangle is the only company on the honor roll to have been recognized every year since its inception in 2003.

The Honor Roll is selected by an independent panel of veteran professionals in a variety of industries. Triangle, like the other companies named to the list, excels in the 10 Characteristics inherent to a “Company That Cares”, which include: establishing and reinforcing ethical standards, treating all employees with respect, recognizing employee contributions, supporting work/life balance for employees, providing a great work environment, and supporting company involvement in the community.

“Here at Triangle, we are excited to be the only company that has been consistently honored by Companies That Care,” said Paul Engel, Triangle’s Sales and Marketing Manager. “We are also very humbled by the fact that Companies That Care established the Bonnie Dayan Memorial Award honoring other Companies That Care employees who achieve the characteristics exhibited by our late owner, Bonnie Dayan.”

“We are extremely pleased that a growing number of organizations – such as Triangle – are focusing on their social responsibility, a focus that sustains individuals, families and communities and can give them an advantage with customers, employees and investors,” said Marci Koblenz, Co-founder and President of Center for Companies That Care.

Those named to the 2009 list feature U.S. companies that are large, medium and small, public and private, for-profit and not-for-profit, in diverse industries across 15 states. A full list of recognized companies appears at www.companies-that-care.org.

The Honor Roll is announced annually in conjunction with the annual launch of CAREDAYS, a month-long national initiative to engage individuals and employers in activities addressing a significant societal issue in our communities. CAREDAYS09 is focused on childhood literacy. Triangle is helping Walker Elementary School in Evanston, Illinois with a book fair to update their library.

Winners were announced today for the 2009 Bonnie Dayan Award for Outstanding Achievement. After a few words from Triangle President David Saltzman, our owner, Yetta Saltzman, opened an envelope to reveal the day’s first winner, Ken Morford.

Ken is a pressman at Triangle who started at the company in the spring of 1990 as a floor helper. He quickly moved up the ranks to become a press feeder and eventually second pressman. As pressman, Ken has the skills to operate all of Triangle’s Komori presses. He enjoys working at Triangle and says it’s a wonderful place to work which is why many of employees have been at Triangle for 10 or 20 years.

A second award was given today posthumously to James “Jimbo” Krawiec, a 23-year employee of Triangle who passed away in June 2008. Jim’s award was graciously accepted by his wife, Christine. Jim started out at Triangle in proofing and contacting, later moving into the stripping department. As computers became more common in the industry, Jim worked as a Scitex operator and then moved on to master prepress on the Mac. Jim was avidly involved with his family and was a coach at Oriole Park for baseball, soccer and floor hockey.

The award ceremony closed with company founder, Harvey Saltzman offering a few words about the meaning of the award, and the dedication of Triangle employees in their everyday work and in participating in the nomination of fellow employees for this prestigious award.
