“We are thrilled to receive so much recognition from the IAVA,” said David Saltzman, president of Triangle. “Many of these projects had unusual printing techniques, including scents and special finishes. Half of these jobs were created by our design department. We are lucky to have and work with so many creative people.”

The Communicator Awards is an international competition recognizing outstanding work in the communications field. 7,500 entries were judged and overseen by the Interational Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA). Judges are industry professionals who looked for companies and individuals whose talent exceeds a high standard of excellence and whose work serves as a benchmark for the industry. Center for Companies That Care, a national not-for-profit, honored Bonnie Shelor, Senior Vice President, Human Resources for Bon Secours Richmond Health System, with its second annual Bonnie Dayan Memorial Award. Shelor was selected for this prestigious award from a field of national candidates whose companies already were named to the national Companies That Care Honor Roll.

“This award was established in the memory of an executive from family-owned Triangle Printers, Inc. who had demonstrated unwavering commitment to ensuring her company invested in its employees and served its communities.  Bonnie Dayan also encouraged other organizations to become caring employers,” said Marci Koblenz, Co-founder and President of Center for Companies That Care.

Bonnie Shelor’s actions are synonymous with Companies That Care’s 10 Characteristics of a Caring Company. Within Bon Secours, Bonnie sets the stage for employees to feel respected and valued.  Each year, employees share their opinions and ideas through surveys and open forums.  With Bonnie as an example, supervisors wholeheartedly support employee development, work/life flexibility, and recognition for jobs well done.  Benefits and compensation programs are offered, reviewed, and enhanced to improve the well-being of employees and their families.  Examples are child care, elder care, scholarships for children and grandchildren, full benefits at 16 hours/week and a minimum wage that exceeds the state mandate by 40%.

The programs Bonnie has implemented at Bon Secours Richmond are the outward expression of something that lies within her.  The reason Bon Secours Richmond is a Company That Cares is because Bonnie is an individual that cares.  Under Bonnie Shelor’s leadership, Bon Secours Richmond Health System has achieved a 4.23 out of 5 employee engagement rating, making her organization one of the highest-scoring healthcare organizations in America.

“The programs we have in place at Bon Secours for employees have all been made possible by Bonnie,” says Dawn Malone, Administrative Director of Work and Family Services, and Bonnie’s nominator. “Bonnie has an amazing ability to recognize a person’s talent and to surround herself with an incredible team. She then listens to that team and puts into place practices that benefit the greater employee population.”

Jill Kennedy, Chief Nursing Executive, said, “As a mother and a chief nursing executive — two professions I take very seriously — I have found that the only thing employees value more than their time is having control of it. Flexibility at Bon Secours Richmond allows employees to be where they need to be most — whether at the bedside of an ill child (or parent) or at work, being fully present to a patient or coworker. Flexibility says to our employees ‘we appreciate, value and trust you.’ Now, isn’t that the kind of person you want caring for you when you’re sick?”

Her impact in the community is exceptional.  Bonnie is routinely called upon to present at conferences and meetings. In these local, state and national opportunities, Bonnie lists Companies That Care Honor Roll as a prestigious achievement of Bon Secours Richmond and how that honor defines it as a preeminent employer.  She also strives to affect priority public policy for health screenings for the public and co-sponsors career transition and phased retirement events with other associations. Bonnie and others at Bon Secours Richmond give their time, energy, and commitment in many meaningful ways.

Bonnie’s heart is in the right place and that is what fuels her drive. She wants Bon Secours Richmond to be a place where the community receives compassionate care, where room is made for miracles to happen, and where employees can have the highest professional and personal satisfaction.  That is why she received this award!

On behalf of all of us here at Triangle, congratulations to Bonnie Shelor for winning this prestigious award.
